The notion that an 80 hectare ‘blank space’ could exist on Sydney Harbour at the center of Australia’s only global city and home to 5 million people is erroneous. As Saarinen expected to understand the room before designing the chair, this studio challenges students to understand the metropolitan systems, politics, and patterns of city development before structuring a design response to The Bays Precinct. The studio initially dealt with a master plan for the full extent of The Bays Precinct site – each of Blackwattle, White and Rozelle Bays – before students selected a specific site with an inherently public program and develop a complex architectural and urban project derived from their master plan proposal.
